Questioning the Madness of Hamlet Essays Questioning the Madness of Hamlet Essay Questioning the Madness of Hamlet Essay Essay Topic: Hamlet Questioning The Madness of Hamlet In the Shakespeare play, Hamlet, there is the question concerning the madness of the main character, Hamlet. There is no real answer to the question, â€Å"Is Hamlet mad†? It is merely based on ones own opinion and interpretation of the play. Although, Hamlet might display qualities of someone mad, is there enough proof to make the statement factual? First, we should look at the definition of what mad really means; According to Dictonary. com, Mad means to be mentally disturbed, deranged, insane, or demented. Considering there is evidence that it is possible Hamlet could actually be mentally disturbed, there is definitely proof that he is just pretending. Hamlet openly admits that he pretends to be deranged, but why is he pretending? There also is proof that he is still logical and reasonable with his decisions, which doesn’t fit the description of the word mad. There are many characters in the play who seem to have evidence that Hamlet is mad, that is just his master plan working. Losing your father and learning that your new father, your uncle, is a murderer would definitely make one lose their reasoning to stay sane. Hamlet had a game plan to seek revenge for his father and it started with having society fooled by making them believe he was a mad man. Starting from the beginning, Hamlet showed anger towards the events that had taken place. Hamlets first solilioquy is where he expresses his feelings and thoughts for the first time about the events. As Hamlet says, O that this too too sullied flesh would melt,/ Thaw, and resolve Itself into a dew,/Or that the Everlasting had not fixed/ His Canon ‘gainst self- slaughter (1. 2. 129-132). Clearly his thoughts here are unlike normal thoughts, but that does not mean he is mad. He talks of suicide and wanting to disappear, but looking at what is happening in the play, anyone of a sane mind wouldn’t want to be around to witness such events. When someone is angry they vent and say stuff that they don’t mean, and that is just what Hamlet is doing. If he wanted to commit suicide, that is just what he would have done. Throughout the play, a presence of a ghost keeps appearing. Does seeing this ghost make Hamlet a mad man? As Horatio says, Two nights together had these gentlemen,/ Marcellus and Barnardo, on Their watch/ In the dead waste and middle of the night/ Been thus Encountered. A figure like your father,/ Armed at point exactly, Cap-a-pie,/ Appears before them and with solemn march/ Goes slow and stately by them (1. 2. 196-202). Well considering that Horatio, Reynaldo, Barnardo, Francisco and Marcellus all saw the ghost along with Hamlet, they would all have to be mad men as well. This is not valid proof that Hamlet is a mad man. It wasn’t a figment of his imagination, the ghost had to be seen in order for all the men to witness the same thing. After seeing the ghost he fills Hamlet in with all the details of his death, Hamlet begins to lay out his plan with steps. He warns his friends of his antic disposition. Hamlet says, â€Å"As I perchance hereafter shall think meet / To put an antic disposition on† (1. 5. 174-175). â€Å"Antic† actually means clown, which means he’s going to put on a show from now on and pretend is he insane. Why would Hamlet pretend to be insane one might want to ask? Well Hamlet wants to show weakness to King Claudius so that he won’t take him as a threat. Hamlet wants to distract the people of Denmark from his real intentions and that is to seek revenge for his father. If it weren’t for Hamlet pretending his madness, King Claudius would have known that something was wrong with his nephew, and surely he would have him killed. If Hamlet didn’t act the way he was, then the King would have seen it in Hamlets eyes that he knew the truth about his father’s death. If you really think about it, today if someone claims they are crazy, the majority will get away with it. If you are believed to be mad, than you can pretty much get away with anything. It was a well thought out plan that only a genius could have thought of. His plan seems to work as he has convinced Polonius that he is a mad man. A conversation between Hamlet and Polonius starts and he ask Hamlet if he knew him. Hamlet responds with, â€Å"Excellent Well. You are a fishmonger† (2. 2. 174). Considering that Polonius is the Kings pet spy, he pretends he doesn’t know who Polonius is. At the same time, he almost makes fun of him. A â€Å"fishmonger† is slang for pimp, which is just what Polonius is to his daughter, Ophelia. Readers may assume that Hamlet is mad, because it is not obvious that Hamlet is pretending, because he does not remind us of his plan of antic disposition The scene of the play where Hamlet shows a perfect example that he still makes logical and reasonable decisions is when he sets up a play to catch the King red handed. In a conversation with Horatio, he tells him to watch the Kings expressions. There is a play tonight before the king. / One scene of it comes near the circumstance / Which I have told thee, of my father’s death. / I Prithee, when thou seest that act afoot, / Even with the very comment of thy soul / Observe my uncle. If his occulted guilt / Do not itself unkennel in one speech,/ It is a damned ghost that we have seen, / And my imaginations are as foul / As Vulcan’s stithy. Give him heedful note, / For I mine eyes will rivet to his face, /And after e will both our judgments join / In censure of his seeming. He simply made a scene in the play that is the exact way his father was killed. From doing this, he hopes to see some sort of reaction out of the King. If he does that, what the ghost had told him is true. Hamlet had great ideas to catch the King. Anyone who is mentally unstable, insane, or demented couldn’t have came up with such a logical way to catch the King red handed. There is just too much evidence in the play that Hamlet is pretending his madness. He simply states his plan of â€Å"antic disposition† and his plan works. So much so that even the readers that know the dramatic irony of his plan still believe that there is a possibility that he is mad. Such events that happened through out the story can definitely leave someone with their reasons, but not Hamlet. He holds to his plan, making sure the King truly indeed did do it and making everyone believe his â€Å"antic disposition. † Even though the killing of the King was not the type that Hamlet probably wished for, revenge was seeked. My paper will be about a person who has inspired millions of people to pursue their dreams and gave them the motivation to never give up. This man’s name is Michael Jeffrey Jordan, also known by his initials â€Å"M.J†. Michael Jordan was born on February 17, of the year 1963. He was born in Brooklyn, New York. He is 6 ft. 6 in tall, and weighs about 216 pounds. Michael Jordan attended to Emsley A. Laney high school in Wilmington, North Carolina. Jordan is one of five children. He has two older brothers, Larry Jordan, and James R. Jordan Jr. Also one older sister named Deloris and a younger sister, by the name of Roslyn. Once Michael graduated high school he attended North Carolina from 1981-1984. This man is an American former professional basketball player, entrepreneur, and majority owner and chairman of the Charlotte Bobcats. The National Basketball Association (NBA) website states, "By acclamation, Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time." In 1984, Michael Jordan was drafted by the Chicago bulls. Since then Jordan dominated the sport Jordan has his place as the greatest basketball player of all time for many reasons one of them is because he never gave up. In high school Michel Jordan was rejected on his high school basketball team for being too short, however that did not stop Michael. This all just intrigued Michael to try harder and be able to succeed. throughout his basketball career from the 1980s-1990s with the Chicago bulls he lead his team to the championship six times, six time NBA finals Most valuable player, five time NBA most valuable player, fourteen time NBA all-star three time NBA all-star game Most Valuable Player, ten time All-NBA first team, All NBA second team, two time NBA slam dunk contes... ...r who comes into the game. People will always remember Jordan as the best player in the game. I don’t know one single person who doesn’t know Jordan he is known worldwide as the man who could fly. He managed to score a half-court shot to win a dunk competition many people didn’t believe he could win. He brought his own moves into the game the same moves that many NBA players use now. I believe that no matter who comes in to the game they will not be remembered the greatest player to ever live like Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan even said that the only person he should ever be compared to is Kobe Bryant and not even he has been able to accomplish what Jordan has accomplished. Michael Jordan has been a huge influence on millions of people until this day. And for that he will always be remembered as the greatest basketball player to ever step on any NBA or other court.

Reaction to Nonfiction Essay

Salvation by Langston Hughes and Who Will Light Incense When Mothers Gone? Are two stories from the text that capture the attention and imagination of the reader. These two are nonfiction short stories that easily relate to the reader as well. Both stories caused a personal reaction as the writer used certain strategies to detail the idea, theme, and purpose behind each of the writings. It is also important to know the difference between a fiction and nonfiction story. The author has to intrigue the reader’s imagination to make the story interesting. Reactions and Strategies Salvation Salvation was written by Langston Hughes in 1940. This is a nonfictional story based on a childhood experience of the authors. Religion was apparently prominent in Hughes childhood and his family seemed to live by God’s word. Religion was so important to his family that he had to make a hard decision on either lying to his family or letting down his Lord. The writer described the day he was to find Jesus as a time to â€Å"bring the young lambs to the fold† (Hughes, 1940. P. 351). The story was moving, intriguing, and heartfelt. The writer made the story believable by giving a detailed setting and theme. The writer also used personal feelings and emotions of others to make this story believable. Who Will Light Incense When Mothers Gone? This short story was written by Andrew Lam in 2003. I was also a nonfictional story based on an experience in Lam’s adult years. Lam’s family were immigrates from Vietnam and the setting is at his mother’s 70th birthday. Lam overheard his mother asking her sister who would continue the tradition of lighting the incense and praying to the ancestors for protection. She seemed to be very concerned as was her sister that this tradition would cease when they passed away. This story was an eye-opener to what one may feel when tradition has been left to the elders and now needs to be passed down to the younger generations. It shows that when one is moved out of their culture they may try to hold on and teach their young, but there is no guarantee that the young will appreciate the values. One line expressed how the writer new his mothers pain, â€Å"mortality never less weighs heavy on her soul† (Lam, 20003. P. 1077). The writer used personal feelings and an insi ght into past and future to guide the reader into a better understanding of the situation. Personal Relation and Intended Purposes Salvation brings back childhood memories of personal experiences with church and family. Memories of summer at vocation bible school camp with friends and the lessons taught by the pastors. Also, movies about African Americans and church in the early and mid 1900’s were thought of during this reading. The purpose of this short story was geared toward understanding the importance of God in the writer’s life and family. The writer also displays the emotional reaction to his decision to lie about finding Jesus. Who Will Light Incense When Mothers Gone?, was a reminder of a military background involved with exposure to many cultures and religious diversities. Every cultures has it’s values and norms. When several generations of a particular culture migrate to America, some of those values will be lost. Individual ambitions will take place of the family traditions and values (Lam, 2003). The mother was upset with the son many times as he grew into an American cowboy, which the Vietnamese identified as being selfish and a rebel (Lam, 2003). The writer’s intent was to inform the reader of a lost tradition with in his family’s culture. Also, to make aware the struggle within to please his mother while upholding his personal ambitions. Nonfiction and Imagination It was apparent that these two stories were nonfiction because both were based on a personal experience that had and emotional impact on their life. The stories related to struggles and decisions that weighed on the consensus. It can be assumed that writing about these events may have taken pressure off the writer. Even with nonfiction the imagination needs to be provoked. The writer must set the theme and give a detailed setting so that the reader can place themselves in the situation. Including emotions of other characters also impact the imagination. If the author is trying to get a certain point across to his readers then they must bring the reader into the scene. Conclusion Both stories were easy to identify with because they were detailed with personal emotions and experiences. The author was aiming for a reaction from the reader that was personal and that was reached. The writer’s intention was clear and understood in both stories and was easy to connect personal experiences with. The two stories were nonfiction and dealt with personal struggles. The Dainty and the Brute

Love is an expression of a feeling that is often associated with emotions, yet it is a part of what has been called functions of the brain. The complicated process that goes through the brain must be too intricate that it sometimes lead to an intertwine of rationality and irrationality and they keep on a locked embrace and mystical mishaps. It takes different forms and twigs could be felt everywhere. Loving a dainty velvet coat would require delicate care. The value of which, in our present-day society filled with different norms of beauty and kindness, is higher than those of the other cloths that may be found.Whether it is silk, fur, cotton, or anything else, when one is in love with the velvet coat there would simply be no other better for it has become the best in a blindfolded eye. One could only see the velvet coat and that alone. The lint, the miscalculated cuts, and the loose threads are not an issue for it is the entire coat that is being loved. Not a single part nor the imp erfections but the whole. One accepts everything and loves everything just to have a feel of loving that coat and having it embrace the body in return.Soon, after the long, or at times short, waiting and hoping, things get better as the body starts to get a feel of the coat wrapped around it. Happiness comes joyfully linger around every portion where the body meets the coat. Sometimes it could bring an itch or a shiver. Water droplets, snowflakes falling, and wind gusting makes the two go well together. Appreciation of the presence of one another is heightened during times when they realize the worth of one another. As the coldness starts to set in around the two, they realize more the warmth and comfort of being with one another.The coat acts as a shield and the body, the source of warmth. It is the giving and the receiving that matters and not the purpose of what one is in the life of another. For if it is only in the purpose where the two would rely on, it would be more a need th an love. After each and every cold and dark night, the scorching heat of the sun would have to come back in the morning. At sunrise, it is still healthy to have a dose of the rays of the sun. However, as temperature starts to rise until the noon, suddenly things seem to be intolerable for both the coat and the body.The coat would not want to get soaked in sweat and the body does not want to sweat, too. It really happens that they are looking at the same direction, at the same image, and at the same angle but different lenses are used. It is the same as the story of the blind men and the elephant where each of the six blind men tried to paint a picture of an elephant taking it from their blinded perspectives and does not take into account what their companions are feeling for them to be able to get hold of the real situation (Adams 149).Just the same, it would be hard for the coat and the body, as both do not want to exist in the same place where they are not happy, to see beyond wha t they are feeling and include the sphere of what the other feels. This is a common mistake that is often associated with the body wearing the coat. There are instances where one could never tolerate having the other and would simply want to give. The idea that being together does not only mean certain situations but rather includes everything there is should be understood.When one would accept being in the space of someone and is likewise accepted to thrive in the personal space of another, stepping out of it could never be easy without leaving a mark that the two were together that is why the body could still hold on for different reasons. Sometimes it is because of the thought of still having the coat all to that particular body. On other instances, it is because the body has been too familiar with the coat that it could not see the self without it.Furthermore, the possibility of holding on no matter how much uneasiness and discomfort there may be attributed to sacrifice and the feeling of warmth during the cold days. It should be noted, however, that the situation of when it could be said that enough is enough is very arbitrary. It is a subjective thought that not even the wisest person could quantify in terms of heat, cold, or reason. There are different factors that could eventually lead to the need to take off the coat and the body separated from it.When the body decides to take off the coat with reasons understood by both from their end, one is given the option to go back to where they are before. If they decide to go back to the old situation, then the temperature of the body would learn to adjust to the one provided by wearing the coat. Likewise, the coat, with the patience of the body, would let air go in for the body and this is the start of something where they would understand one another though it would still not be the best fit and would still give way to different problems, which is normally expected.On the other hand, when it is deemed best t hat another suit is chosen, there are a variety of options to choose from and it is likely that one could get choose another one which is not suited to his/her personality and it would again, be determined whether or not it would be successful. If you are new to teaching adults, you have hopefully been provided with training in this area, but if not, take steps to prepare yourself. Start with crucial skills and principles for teachers of adults. Establishing Norms Setting classroom norms is one of the best methods of classroom management. Hang a flip chart or poster, or dedicate a section of the whiteboard, if you have space,  and list expected classroom behaviors for everyone to see. Refer to this list when disruptions occur. Using a flip chart or whiteboard can be especially useful because you can involve students in the construction of the list on the first day. Start with a few of your own expectations and ask the group for additional suggestions. When you all agree on how you want the classroom to be managed, disruptions are minimal. These include disruptions like chatting in the back of the room, texting, or someone who is argumentative or disrespectful.
